Canter Curtain-Raiser For Western Derby XLVIII

Published Date: Mon 28 May 2018

The Wally Foreman Foundation (WFF) announces its second year of partnership with the West Coast Eagles, with the Foundation's Corporate Canter event to be staged as the curtain-raiser for the Round 20 Western Derby showdown against the Fremantle Dockers at Optus Stadium on Sunday 5 August.

The Corporate Canter - an annual light-hearted relay aimed at drawing out the friendly competition of the corporate sector - is the flagship event of the WFF and has received strong support over the first three years of running.

The Canter debuted in 2015 in front of strong crowds as the opening event to Athletics Australia and Athletics WA's now-defunct Perth Track Classic, before shifting as the curtain-raiser to a West Coast Eagles match in 2017 through the generosity of the AFL Club.

WFF Chair Glen Foreman said: "This is an incredible opportunity for the Wally Foreman Foundation and we extend our sincere thanks to the West Coast Eagles for again hosting the Corporate Canter as a curtain raiser.

"West Coast has provided the Foundation with the opportunity to be among the action of a Western Derby and, when it comes to WA football, regular-season games don't get much bigger than that.

"The Foundation receives invaluable exposure at an event such as an AFL game, but the benefit of the Eagles' generosity also extends to those organisations that participate in the Canter and that enables us to continue the work we do.

"We've had 15 different organisations take part in the Canter over its first three years, with several of those having participated in multiple runs, all of which have helped the Wally Foreman Foundation support the athletes and coaches that need a little bit of a leg-up to make it.

"It's only because of bodies such as the West Coast Eagles that we can continue to support the cause that dad so passionately championed throughout his life.

Calling For Nominations

Teams participating in the 2018 Wally Foreman Foundation Corporate Canter will have the opportunity to showcase their organisation as part of the curtain raiser event for the Western Derby on Sunday 5 August, treading the same turf as the AFL players that will follow them mere minutes later.

Each team is also provided with four tickets to the match - one for each participant - to enjoy the game once they have completed their run.

Teams are encouraged to wear their organisation's polo/branded attire for the Canter to maximise this brand-exposure opportunity.

This year's Canter will feature up to eight teams running a 4x120m relay on one of the wings of Optus Stadium.

The Foundation welcomes enquiries and nominations.

Team entry is $2500 and enquiries can be made via event coordinator Sam Maxwell (sam@emageogroup.com.au | +61 438 842 123) for either nominations or further information.

Wally Foreman Foundation

WFF aspires to continue the work of respected sports broadcaster and administrator Wally Foreman, who was a strong and tireless advocate for West Australian athletes and coaches, before his passing in 2006 from a heart attack.

The Foundation, through its activities and the generous support of the community raises funds to support athletes and coaches, who are not covered by existing scholarships, in their pursuit of sporting excellence.

WFF Scholarships

The tremendous and ongoing support of organisations such as the Carbine Club, an inaugural and consistent benefactor, has helped the Foundation issue 42 scholarships since its inception, with grants presented each year at the WA Institute of Sport annual awards night.

Applications for this year's round of scholarships will open towards the end of August to early September.
